Should You Repair or Replace Your HVAC System?

If your heating system doesn’t appear to be running like it used to, it’s probably time to make a decision. Will a repair of your heating system be sufficient? Or should you get a new HVAC? Deciding whether to repair or replace with a new HVAC system takes keeping a few important considerations in mind.

Signs It’s Time to Repair Your Heating System
Sometimes all your system needs is an expert tune-up from a qualified HVAC professional. Here are five signs that a repair is in order.

  1. The system starts making strange noises – Banging, rattling, screeching and other noises that your heating system didn’t used to make are clear signs you need a professional system inspection.
  2. Weak airflow – If the air coming from your vents has weakened, call an HVAC repairman. There could be a problem with the unit’s fans or the motor itself. A licensed technician can diagnose, fix the problem and have the warm air flowing once again.
  3. Cold airflow – When your system begins blowing cold air, that’s an obvious sign that repairs are in order.
  4. The furnace runs more often – If you notice that your furnace is running more frequently than it should be given the outside temperature, call in an expert for an assessment.
  5. Your heating bill has gone up – When it’s colder outside, you expect your heating bill to go up in cost. But if the bill is higher and you’re not using the heater any more than usual, it’s time to get the unit checked.

Signs It’s Time for a New Heating System
Eventually, all heating systems need to be replaced. These top five signs are an indication that it’s time for a new HVAC.

  1. The heating system is old – If your heat pump is more than 10 years old and your furnace or boiler is older than 15 years, it’s recommended that you get a new HVAC.1 A new, more energy efficient system will do a better, more reliable job of heating your home.
  2. Frequent repairs are necessary – If your HVAC system is increasingly requiring more repairs, it’s time to think about replacement. A good rule of thumb is if the cost to repair is 50 percent or higher than the cost of replacement, then it’s time to get a new HVAC.
  3. There’s moisture or water build-up – Heating systems that require replacement experience water pooling around the vents or chimney or flue pipe. Excess moisture may also appear around the heating unit. In addition, there may be moisture buildup on cold surfaces in your home like windows.
  4. Rooms are heating inconsistently – If some rooms are warmer than others, that’s a sign that the system and/or ductwork requires replacement.
  5. There are signs of carbon monoxide leakage – When your safety is compromised, it’s definitely time to get a new HVAC system. Older systems can release poisonous carbon monoxide gas into your home. At low levels, it will cause flu-like symptoms. At high levels, carbon monoxide can kill.
    Safety First

A flickering or yellow pilot light flame may indicate that carbon monoxide is releasing into your home. A carbon monoxide detector sounding is an obvious indicator as well. If you suspect a carbon monoxide leak in your home, leave immediately and call a licensed HVAC specialist for assistance.
